Course Description: This course is designed to enable a better understanding of human impact on our surroundings and the environmental needs of the future. Students study a variety of topics that include: biotic and abiotic factors in habitats; ecosystems and biomes; interrelationships among resources and an environmental system; sources and flow of energy through an environmental system; relationships between carrying capacity and changes in populations and ecosystems. Lab work, the use of multimedia and computer simulations, and laboratory and field investigations are important components of this course.
The regulations of North East ISD will be enforced in this classroom. These will include the policies on absences, tardies, hats, electronics, dress code, and food. Being in school is a privilege. Take advantage of your opportunity and don’t waste your time.
Materials: You will be required to take notes, do labs, and keep a portfolio of work. Bring the following everyday –
(1) Spiral Notebook - BRING YOUR NOTEBOOK TO CLASS!! EVERYDAY!! WITHOUT FAIL!!!
(2) Pencils, pens, loose-leaf paper
Grading: Your grade will be determined as follows:
Tests: 30%, Class-work/Homework: 25%, Labs: 25%, Quizzes: 20%
Late Work Policy:
LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT 20% PENALTY AND WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER 3 WEEKS FROM THE DUE DATE OR AFTER THE UNIT TEST (WHICHEVER COMES FIRST). You must turn in homework to the appropriate bin at the beginning of class. This does not refer to make-up work due to an excused absence. MAKE-UP WORK IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY and will be due within the number of days, equivalent to days missed, of returning to school or it is considered late. Student will need to check the assignment page for the missing work and then get the required assignments.
Warm-up: Everyday when you come into class you need to start your warm-up. The questions may include past material, future material, and possible test material. You must keep your warm-ups in your notebooks.
Lab: It is your responsibility to take care of lab equipment and lab area. You must follow all safety procedures and instructions or you will not be allowed to participate in the lab. If one member of the lab group takes the unfinished assignment home and is absent during the next lab day, the remaining lab partner(s) must start the lab over and will be expected to compete the assignment on time.
Homework: Any homework is due at the beginning of class. I cannot over emphasize the importance of putting effort into completing your homework. Science involves many skills that must be practiced. Lack of effort on homework WILL have a negative effect on your grades in class!
Tutoring: I want each one of you to have a successful year! Toward that end, I am available for tutoring before school. If the tutoring times available will not work for you, we can make other arrangements. Please, do not hesitate to ask for assistance!
Academic Integrity/Cheating/Plagiarism: You, at times, will be placed in groups for the purpose of cooperative learning. Your tests and written work, however, are expected to be completed on your own. Students cheating or unfairly assisting other students during a test will lose all credit on that test. Students may cooperate on lab write-ups, but they may not copy each other’s work. If caught copying another student’s work, both students will not receive credit for that assignment. Similarly, plagiarism will result in zero credit for an assignment and a referral.
Final Advice: Science is challenging, but you can succeed in this class if you follow these key steps:
·Keep up with your assignments. Use the Web Site to catch up after an absence and avoid missing class whenever possible. Falling behind is the kiss of death!
· Ask for help when you need it. Whether that means asking a question during class or coming in for tutoring, I am here to help you in any way I can!
·Take advantage of opportunities to boost your grade – corrections, retests, and extra credit.
·Work hard and use your brain! I work very hard for you, and I expect nothing less in return.
